How to Study for the AP Chemistry Exam: A Complete 30-Day Plan

Why 30 Days Is Enough, If You Use It Right

Thirty days sounds tight for a year’s worth of chemistry, and if you spend it rereading your notes, it is. But 30 days is plenty of time to go from shaky to confident if you spend it doing the two things that actually move your score: solving problems and reviewing your mistakes. In 25 years of teaching this course, the students who jump one or two points in the final month are never the ones who read the most. They’re the ones who practiced the most and paid attention to why they got things wrong.

Days 30-21: Rebuild Your Foundation

One month out, start by taking a full practice exam under real conditions before you review anything. It will feel rough, and that’s the point: it tells you exactly which units are actually weak versus which ones just feel weak. Score it honestly and sort your mistakes by unit. For most students, three or four units account for most of the lost points, usually equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, or kinetics. Spend this first week and a half rebuilding those units from the ground up: rewatch the lessons, redo the practice problems you got wrong, and don’t move on until you can explain the concept out loud without your notes. Want to know if you actually grasped a concept? Explain it to abuela, or mee-maw, or granny, or whomever has the least amount of science knowledge in your family. If after explaining LeChatelier’s principles to granny, she can tell you why equilibrium will shift one way versus another…you understand that concept!

Days 20-11: Attack Your Weakest Units

Notice it did not say attack ALL the units! We are not going to learn the entire year’s worth of stuff in the last month, however, you can lock down 2 or 3 big ideas that pop up throughout the exam. This is the bulk of your prep, and it should be almost entirely problem-based. For each weak unit, work through 15 to 20 practice questions, then go back through every single one you missed and write, in your own words, exactly where your reasoning broke down. Not “I forgot the formula,” but “I forgot that adding a common ion shifts equilibrium left, so I picked the wrong direction.” That level of specificity is what actually sticks. Keep a running mistake log. By the end of this stretch, you should be able to flip through it and see the same two or three errors showing up again and again, which tells you precisely what to drill in the final push.

Days 10-4: Practice Under Real Exam Conditions

Switch from topic drills to full sections, timed. Do a multiple-choice section in 90 minutes and a free-response set in 105, with a calculator when it’s allowed and not when it isn’t, exactly like test day. This is where students discover that they actually know the chemistry but run out of time on the free response, or that they’re strong on the math but shaky on explaining their reasoning in words, which the AP graders require for full credit. Fix whichever gap you find. If it’s pacing, practice writing more concise answers. A general rule of thumb is that if you need more than three sentences for an explanation, your are probably making stuff up. If it’s explanation, practice stating the “why” behind every number you write down.

The Final 3 Days

Stop learning new material. Your only job now is reinforcement and rest. Skim your mistake log, redo a handful of the free-response questions that gave you trouble, and review the formula sheet until you know it cold, since the exam provides it but you shouldn’t be searching it under time pressure. Sleep matters more than one more practice set at this point. A tired brain forgets equilibrium shifts it knew perfectly well the week before.

What Not to Do

Don’t try to relearn everything from scratch in 30 days, you don’t need to and you don’t have time. Don’t study passively by just rereading notes or watching videos on 2x speed without stopping to solve anything. And don’t skip free-response practice because it feels harder to grade yourself, it’s worth just as many points as multiple choice and it’s where most students leave points on the table.
